From the Merinides Tomb we took a beautiful, circuitous route along the hills surrounding the Old City until we were a fifteen minute walk away from historic Al-Andalus Mosque. Maryam, the sister of Fatimah al-Fihri (founder of the Qariwiyyin mosque) founded Al-Andalus. In the 10th century, the Umayyads of Córdoba added the minaret, an exact replica to the minaret of the Qariwiyyin. I was very fortunate to get permission to take photos of the interior, something that's generally not allowed.

One of the most memorable activities (out of the many memorable activities) was a post-Fajr hiking race to the historic Merinides tombs overlooking the entirety of Old Fes. The ancient tombs possibly house royals but are crumbling and horribly deteriorated. Still, there is some script and markings visible in the stone. The boys didn't always visit Fez's beautiful sites, they also had also had group competitions and activities. Here's one: a game of hopscotch and balance, team work and communication! A sort of relay race, if you will. They boys clearly had a lot of fun, even if it did look a little ridiculous on camera. |
Rujulah Retreat is a character building camp designed to embolden Muslim boys towards realizing the quality of rujulah (manhood) through team-based physical activities, competitions, and service to others in the ruggedness of nature –far removed from the comforts of home and suburban lifestyle.
